Care For

Motorcycle Leather

The basic idea behind motorcycle leather care is to maintain the natural oils that your leathers had when they were new. These oils lubricate the leather keeping it soft and pliable while repelling dirt and water. Doc Bailey’s Leather Black, Leather Tonic and Leather Clear contain Lanolin oil that is readily absorbed into leather. Motorcycle leather is exceptionally difficult to maintain as both oxidation and chemical damage occur faster at higher temperatures. We all love them sunny, warm days but it fries our motorcycle leather! How often you treat your leathers depends on how often you ride and where you store your leathers. Your jacket, chaps and gloves may be stored inside a cool closet but how about your saddlebags and seat? I recommend treating all leathers at least every three to four months during the active riding season. Saddle bags, seat and all leather attached to your ride should be treated more often. Personally, I treat the seat and top of my saddlebags once a month.

Wet leather presents an additional set of problems. When leather becomes wet the water draws out the oils present in your leather leaving it dry and stiff. In this state road chemicals and dirt will readily enter the pores of your leather necessitating immediate leather care. It is important to remember the proper way to dry leather is away from heat and out of direct sunlight! Once the leather is dry wipe with a damp cloth to remove any road film that might be present and let dry. Once dry apply Doc Bailey's to replace the Lanolin oil, waterproof, and soften the leather. Dry or stiff leather should not be flexed without thorough lubrication first. Doc Bailey is the only product I have used that will actually waterproof leather. Doc Bailey guarantees satisfaction and so do I. If anyone has a unique leather problem feel free to contact me at: email@valueteck.com
